Synopsis

On the September 26, 2004 edition of Rewind - a regular ABC program on Australian history - one of the three stories offered a historical overview (with some re-enactments) of the Bunuba people's relationship with white settlers in their region in the late 19th century. The story focused particularly on the outline and significance of Jandamarra's story to the Bunuba.

Location notes:

Windjana Gorge was the actual, historical location of Jandamarra's hide-out. The site has significance for the Bunuba people as a burial ground and as a pathway through which the Rainbow Serpent travelled during the Dream Time, carving the walls of the gorge. It is formed by the intersection of the Lennard River and the Napier Range.

Windjana Gorge, Kimberley, Western Australia

Jandamarra's Rock, named after the resistance leader, is located in the middle of the gorge near the start of the walking trail.
