The Intruders

Director: Robinson, Lee
Year: 1969
Type: Film

Synopsis

Commonly referred to as Skippy and the Intruders, this feature length film is a spin-off of the children's TV series, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. Skippy helps rescue kidnapped children and catch criminals who are pretending to be diving for abalone at Mallacoota Inlet, near the fictional Waratah National Park: "Head Ranger Matt Hammond (Ed Devereaux) and Flight Ranger Jerry King (Tony Bonner) deal with two suspicious divers seeking permits to fish off the coasts of Waratah National Park. Their real motives, however, are more nefarious" (IMDB synopsis).

Narrative Locations

Mallacoota Inlet, Lakes, Victoria

Temporal setting: Circa 1968

Location notes:

The working title for The Intruders was Mallacoota, which is the name of the seaside holiday town in which the film is set and shot. Thanks to J. Grant, Honorary Curator - M&DHS Inc - Mallacoota WWII Bunker Museum, for contributing information about this location.

Mallacoota is a small coastal town in Victoria, near the NSW border. It is popular as a tourist destination due to its proximity to Gabo Island and Croajingolong National Park.

Much of the action in the Skippy movie took place at Mallacoota: "there was a large amount of location filming down the coast at Mallacoota Inlet" (See http://www.classicaustraliantv.com/Skippy.htm). According to J. Grant, the Mallacoota Inlet entrance - also known as 'the bar' - features in some of the abalone boat scenes.
