Temporal setting: 1980s
Location notes:
Gunlom Gorge is the location where Mick Dundee spears a fish and cooks bush tucker. Gunlom Gorge was previously known as UDP Falls (after the Uranium Developing and Prospecting Company); in the Crocodile Dundee movie it is referred to as Echo Pool. The local Aboriginal people refer to Gunlom as "sickness country," which scientists have linked to the presence of Uranium in the area. Uranium mines operated in the Gunlom region between 1954 and 1964.
Quotes
According to the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of Kakadu National Park, "Much of this region
is known to Jawoyn as Buladjang, or sickness country. Jawoyn say that if people
disturb Buladjang country they will become unwell. Scientists have made a
correlation between the location of potentially harmful mineral deposits such
as uranium and the location of major Bula sites."
