Synopsis

Jandamarra depicts the charged, violent dealings between the Bunuba people of the Kimberley region and the white settlers seeking to colonise the region in the late 19th century. It focuses particularly on Jandamarra, a man who worked with the police in tracking his own people before spearheading the Bunuba resistance

Narrative Locations

Derby Gaol, Kimberley, Western Australia

Temporal setting: 1890s

Location notes:

Derby was the first permanent colonial outpost established by the colonial settlers in the Kimberley region. It is located on King Sound, near the mouth of the Fitzroy River. The town's gaol held large numbers of Aboriginal prisoners, who were marched there in chains. They were forced to labour (in chains, and often against their will) on roads and tram-tracks.

Windjana Gorge, Kimberley, Western Australia

Temporal setting: 1890s

Location notes:

Windjana Gorge

The play, Jandamarra, was performed on location at Windjana Gorge in 2008. Windjana Gorge was the actual, historical location of Jandamarra's hide-out. The site has significance for the Bunuba people as a burial ground and as a pathway through which the Rainbow Serpent travelled during the Dream Time, carving the walls of the gorge.
