A Hamersley bus passenger's story in Gillespie's book that found its way into the film: I was the only woman on the bus. There was, however, this big red dog sitting on the seat behind the driver and I thought, why should that animal have a seat on the bus while I stand? There began the battle of wits--the more I tried to shift him, the more he'd nose me off the seat.

He was born of a litter of three in Paraburdoo and was one owned by Col. Cummings. Recalling his early puppyhood, Col. says, "He was (sic) a natural wanderlust from the outset, and from the outset had a limitless supply of energy. At least once a week Tally [as he was then known] would be taken to the Paraburdoo airport, seven kilometres from town and dropped off, and then I'd head back into town flat out with the dog racing after the car. Even that didn't seem to tire Tally out.

Red Dog's vet, Rick Fenny, states: Eventually he came to visit the veterinary clinic of his own accord, though I expect it was my own little red bitch that was the attraction. Any extended visit could prove to be an embarrassment as he came to regard the wide verandah of the old stone house in Roebourne as his own territory.
