Synopsis

Jamie Carr is a young man growing up in Bundaberg, Northern [sic] Queensland during the closing years of World War I. Jamie, who is in his final year of high school, was brought up by his grandmother. Grandma Carr is known and loved by all in the town, and does her best to help Jamie through the emotional  turmoil of adolescence. After the death of his beloved grandmother, Jamie sets out to build a future of his own in the city as he and his friends face the possibility of being sent to war. – Umbrella DVD



Adaptation of: The Mango Tree (McKie, Ronald, 1974)
Ronald McKie's semi-autobiographical novel The Mango Tree was adapted to film shortly after its release. The film by the same title, released in 1977, was written (and produced) by Michael Pate. The film covers a shorter period of Jamie's life than the novel, and is set around 1918, featuring the end of World War I.

The film is set entirely in Bundaberg and the production involved all location-shooting in Bundaberg and surrounding towns. 

Shooting Locations

Gayndah, Bundaberg region, Queensland

The Queensland town of Gayndah was a shooting location for many town shots of The Mango Tree. The Grand Hotel, still situated on the corner of Weson and Warton Streets in Gayndah, is visible in multiple scenes. Though the entire main street of Gayndah was transformed for the shoot, with sand brought in to cover the bitumen on the roads, shops repainted and hoardings replaced (Keith Finlay in the Australian Women's Weekly 26 October 1977).

Coordinates have been given for the Grand Hotel.

Cordalba, Bundaberg region, Queensland

Cordalba was a shooting location for The Mango Tree. The white church featured in the film is located on Hodges Road, in Cordalba. It is probable other locations were also used.

Bundaberg South State School, Bundaberg region, Queensland

Bundaberg South State School was a shooting location for The Mango Tree. 

Walla Station, Bundaberg region, Queensland

The Walla Station located on the banks of Burnett River, off of the Bruce Highway fifteen kilometres south from Gin Gin, was a shooting location for The Mango Tree. It is not open to the public but can be seen from Walla Island.

Mount Perry, Bundaberg region, Queensland

Mount Perry, fifty kilometres west of Gin Gin, was a shooting location for The Mango Tree.

Bundaberg Distillery, Bundaberg region, Queensland

The "Millaquin" Sugar Mill, located on Whittred Street in Bundaberg on the banks of the Burnett River, was a shooting location for The Mango Tree. The stand-off with "the preacher" occurs at the sugar mill here. Bundaberg Sugar Company was also a financial investor of the film.


Bundaberg Railway Station, Bundaberg region, Queensland  

Temporal setting: 1918

Location notes:

The film begins and ends with the scene of Jamie departing Bundaberg via train, as he travels to the city after the war has ended.
